Introduction

Think of the CF1 as a miniature, but full featured PC with a DOS-like operating system that plugs into and becomes part of your custom instrumentation. Instead of tethering your data acquisition electronics to an external PC, you build in the PC as an integral part of the design.

Like a PC, the CF1 has a "BIOS" and "Disk Operating System" (PicoDOS) for its "hard drive" (CompactFlash cards) that use a standard Windows compatible directory and file system. There's COM port with RS-232 drivers for RXD, TXD, CTS, and RTS, and a built-in "power supply" (3.3 volt regulator), 256KB of RAM for running programs or buffering data, and full address and data bus expansion for additional memory and peripherals.

Unlike a PC, the CF1 has advanced power management circuitry and integrated subsystems that make it particularly well suited for remote and battery powered applications. Its QSPI (Queued Serial Peripheral Interface) module makes it easy to add up to fourteen A-D converters, D-A converters, UARTs, analog multiplexors, and parallel I/O lines with a simple high speed four wire interface. Fifteen counter/timer pins perform 16 bit pulse width/period measurement, 7 to 16 bit pulse width modulation, input edge capture, output compare, or fast digital I/O.
